Driver in deadly Montrose crash was about four times over legal drinking limit, authorities say

Houston police said Joseph McMullin was out on a first date Kristina Chambers lost control of the car she was driving around a curve on Westheimer at about 100 mph.

HOUSTON — While Kristina Chambers waits to make her first court appearance, KHOU 11 News is learning more about the deadly crash she is accused of causing last week.

According to court documents, Chambers, 32, was nearly four times over the legal drinking limit when she lost control and crashed. She's due in court for the first time on Wednesday.

The crash

Houston police said Joseph McMullin, 33, was out on a first date when a car came speeding around a curve on Westheimer at about 100 mph.

"It was his first date with her," a Houston Police Department official said.

It was about 2:30 a.m. and they had just come out of the Voodoo Doughnut near Montrose Boulevard. Surveillance video showed the crash.

McMullin's date, Brianna Iturrino, said the Porsche barely missed her.

"I knew she wasn't going to make the curve," she said.

The car hit McMullin and then crashed into a pole. Police said there were two other people inside the car. Both of them survived.

Chambers was initially taken to a hospital for treatment, but on Monday, KHOU 11 News was told that she was booked into the Harris County Jail.

What prosecutors are saying

Chambers is charged with intoxication manslaughter and prosecutors filed a motion asking for a $50,000 bond.

Prosecutors wrote to the court and asked for a higher bond, saying she was a "clear danger to the community."

Chambers' court-appointed attorney did not respond to KHOU 11 News' request for comment.
