Galveston PD: Suspect killed in shootout with officers at popular bar

Galveston police said the man entered a house illegally before he was found and a shootout broke out at the bar.

GALVESTON, Texas — A man was shot and killed Wednesday at a popular Galveston bar.

According to police, the man entered an East End home illegally around 3:15 p.m.

About 15 minutes later, officers found him at Woody's Bar on the West End.

When they got there, police said, the man ignored commands to put down his weapon and ended up firing shots at officers, who also opened fire on the man. The man was struck and killed.

"At some point, officers on scene feared for their own safety," Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli said.

Balli said the officers involved in the shooting would be placed on modified duty assignments pending the investigation into the shooting.

The Galveston Police Department's policy is to have officer-involved shootings investigated by an outside law enforcement agency. The Texas Rangers and Galveston County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Team were called in to conduct the investigation into this shooting.
