'I don't care if you're blood' | Family split on whether to support mother charged in connection with twins' deaths

Massail and Mirena Vega, 6-week-old twins, died of blunt force trauma, an autopsy revealed. Their parents have been charged in connection with their deaths.

HOUSTON, Texas — The short lives of Massail and Mirena Vega were filled with unimaginable trauma that the 6-week-olds could not verbalize, according to authorities.

"There should have been something done," said great aunt Sarah Calderon.

She is the aunt to Angelina Calderon, the 21-year-old mother of the twins who died of blunt force trauma, an autopsy revealed.

Angelina and the babies' father, Fernando Vega, 21, both face two counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury in connection with the twins' deaths.

Sarah Calderon said her niece deserves what's coming to her if the allegations are proven true.

"I don't care if you're blood or whatever," Sarah Calderon said. "Like, those babies didn't deserve to go through what they went through."

The twins were found unresponsive in October 2023 after police said Vega claimed he left them in his grandmother's care. It wasn't until late last week that charges were filed following a complete autopsy that showed bruises, abrasions, and contusions, both new and old. The twins were also severely malnourished and dehydrated, according to the autopsy.

During court on Monday, Angelina Calderon had a loud, emotional outburst as she tried to explain that Vega was the last one with the children.

"I don't care! You're making me look like I'm a bad person," she said in court.  "I don't f*****g care. I was at work when they f*****g died."

Sarah Calderon said the family is split over whether to support her.

"At the end of the day, you're the mother and father," she said. "Y'all are the ones responsible for the babies' well-being."

A judge gave both Angelina Calderon and Vega a $750,000 bond for each count against them related to the twins' deaths. They were ordered to not have contact with each other or other children.

Angelina Calderon and Vega's current charges carry a possible sentence of up to life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors said murder charges are also possible.

She is due back in court for a bond reduction hearing on Friday. Vega will be back in court in May.
