Dad eats daughter's pot brownies, thought he had stroke

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A dad thought he was having a stroke after eating several brownies that his teenage daughter had baked the previous night.

The 58-year-old man didn't know the sweet treats contained a psychoactive ingredient: marijuana.

Firefighters and deputies responded to a medical call Wednesday at the home about 40 miles northwest of Detroit. After police arrived, the man's 17-year-old daughter admitted to baking pot brownies, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday.

Officials did not release the names of the father and daughter.

Though medical marijuana has been legal in the state for qualified patients since 2008, possession of pot by others in any amount is a misdemeanor that can lead to a jail term of up to one year and a fine of up to $2,000, according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, better known as NORML.

Seventeen other states and the District of Columbia have decriminalized marijuana possession, according to the nonprofit, which lobbies to legalize marijuana.

The father was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Pontiac, Mich., according to the sheriff's office. The remaining brownies were taken to a lab for analysis, and an investigation is under way. Officials had not determined Friday whether the girl would be charged.
