HPD looking for pickup truck driver they say kept going after fatally striking a man in Spring Branch

One of the victim's roommates said the victim came to the US from Honduras. He'd been sending money he made back home to his family.

HOUSTON, Texas — Friends said a cowboy hat placed on an electrical box belonged to the man killed in a hit-and-run Tuesday night along Long Point Road near Antoine Drive.

"You know, there's no competition between a 3000-pound car and a person," said neighbor Jon Volkmer.

In this case, Houston police believe it was possibly a black Chevy Silverado pickup truck that struck the victim as he crossed the road outside of a crosswalk.

"The pickup truck was driving at a high rate of speed, struck the pedestrian, and threw the pedestrian into the parking lot of a local business," said Houston Police Sgt. David Rose on the scene.

That business shared surveillance video with KHOU 11 News.

"And it doesn't appear the truck driver tried to slow down at all," said Rose.

One of his roommates said the victim came to the US from Honduras. He'd been sending money he made back home to his family.

Francisco Gonzalez said he and the victim spoke just minutes before the crash.

"Somebody say "stop," somebody say "stop," said Gonzalez.

Police told us the victim might have shared some of the fault if the driver had done things differently.

"But because that driver did not stop, now they have pretty much all the culpability for this accident," said Rose. "There's a criminal charge associated with it, a felony."

"I hope that they catch him and hope that they prosecute him," said Volkmer.

Failing to stop and render aid is among the charges the driver faces if identified.

Multiple friends told us the victim's first name was Porfirio. His identity has yet to be confirmed by the medical examiner's office.
