HOUSTON — A man and woman on a moped were struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on the Gulf Freeway early Wednesday, according to Houston police.
Witnesses said a maroon pickup truck struck the white moped and the victims, both 37, were ejected.
It happened in the southbound lanes near Cullen Boulevard just after midnight.
Because there's a slight hill, several other vehicles also struck the victims, Houston police said, and some of them didn't stop.
Investigators are hoping other witnesses will come forward because they don't have a lot to go on. They said the pickup will have extensive front-end damage.
"We are going to be combing the area for video, to see if we can get video of the crash, and we're gonna be obtaining any of the car parts and pieces of the vehicles that we see on the roadway," HPD Sgt. David Rose said.
Anyone with information on the wanted pickup truck and driver is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
An emergency vehicle responding to that crash was struck by a maroon Tahoe that also hit a couple of other vehicles before speeding away, Rose said. One person was injured and taken to the hospital.
HPD officers tracked down the Tahoe and arrested the driver and passenger.
Rose said he's seen a lot of bad accidents in this area because of the hillcrest so drivers should slow down.
"This is a very dangerous stretch of freeway, I've worked several fatals up here," Rose said. "This is not an area to drive at excessive speeds, this is an area where you have to be careful when you're driving through, particularly at night."
