Hurricane Delta expected to produce high tides in Galveston

A Tropical Storm Watch and a Coastal Flood Watch are already in effect for Galveston ahead of Hurricane Delta's eventual landfall, expected to be later this week.

GALVESTON, Texas — City of Galveston officials said they're expecting tides up to 5 feet above average beginning later this week due to Hurricane Delta.

The city said the high tides would begin on Thursday and could cause some coastal flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. The storm is expected to hit the Gulf Coast as a major hurricane later this week. Although the Texas coast is not expected to be directly impacted, officials still want residents to be aware and prepared for anything.

A Tropical Storm Watch and a Coastal Flood Watch are in effect for the City of Galveston. Officials are warning residents to be aware and to be prepared for high tides, particularly for residents in the West End, Harborside Drive, areas north of Broadway and lower elevation areas of downtown.

The area should prepare for:

  • Beach erosion caused by high tides
  • Street flooding
  • Possible water inundation in low-lying beach and bay communities
  • Poor street drainage with any rainfall next week

"The City of Galveston is preparing for high tides by running our storm management drainage plans. We encourage residents to properly dispose of any items in their yard that could blow or float into drains, such as tree limbs or yard brush. We recommend residents who live in low-lying areas with tidal flooding to prepare for the possibility of impassable roads, which could cause residents in those areas to be homebound. As always during storm season, residents should make sure they have any medications needed."
