Santa Fe teenager arrested after 17-year-old girl shot in chest

A group of teenagers were drinking alcohol and playing with .22 caliber rifle when it went off and hit a girl in the chest.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — One teenager was arrested after a 17-year-old girl was shot in the chest at a home near Santa Fe. 

Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said that several teenagers drinking alcohol and playing with a .22 caliber rifle inside the house. 

Jeremiah Park, 19, of Santa Fe, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which is a second degree felony. His bond is set at $20,000. 

Galveston County Sheriff's Deputies were called to Mainland Center Hospital in Texas City at 4:40 a.m. Sunday, July 14. Deputies talked to a 17-year-old girl from Alvin who was shot in the chest with a .22 caliber rifle. 

While investigating, they discovered the shooting happened in the 17000 block of Willow Pond Drive in Algoa. The neighborhood is about three miles away from Santa Fe High School. Park was holding the rifle when it went off and hit the girl in the chest, Trochesset said. 

The 17-year-old is expected to recover. 

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office referred the case to the Galveston County District Attorney's Office, who approved the charges against Park.
