Man critically injured after leading police on brief chase for not wearing seat belt

Before the chase, the man hit the officer with his car. Luckily, the officer only sustained a knee injury.

HOUSTON — An officer was injured Sunday morning after he pulled a man over for not wearing his seat belt. 

The Houston Police Department said the officer was conducting a seat belt operation near Highway 59 and Bellaire when he saw the man wasn't wearing a seat belt. 

The officer directed the man to pull over and the man did, but after a brief pause, the man accelerated forward and hit the officer with his car.

The officer was able to make it back to his unit and chase after the man.

Police said the man drove through intersection of Highway 59 and Hillcroft and was T-boned by a pickup. The crash caused the suspect's vehicle to spin out and slam into a light pole.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. 

Luckily, the police officer only sustained a knee injury.

Two other drivers were injured in the crash. There injuries are minor. 

Police said the District Attorney's office has accepted a number of charges on the suspect including, aggravated assault on a public servant, evading and aggravated assault.
