Vote that would lay off 220 Houston firefighters delayed to next week

If approved, the proposal would also lead to a reduction in ladder trucks and the reassignment of other equipment.

HOUSTON — Councilman Dwight Boykins has tagged an agenda item to vote on the lay offs of 220 firefighters to next week.

The vote was expected to take place Wednesday as part of the city's Proposition B implementation.

The current proposal from Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Pena calls for big changes within the department, including the layoffs of 220 classified firefighters and the removal of some ladder trucks.

Last week, firefighters agreed to resume negotiations with Mayor Sylvester Turner -- but with conditions.

Voters in 2018 approved Proposition B, which requires equal pay for firefighters and police officers based off job titles and experience.
