Thousands turn out for MLK Day parades in Downtown and Midtown

The original parade has been held in downtown for more than 40 years with an estimated 40,000 people in attendance.

HOUSTON — Thousands of people showed up to celebrate civil rights icon, Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday at two parades, one in Downtown and one in Midtown.

For more than two decades, Houston has had competing rival parades on MLK Day at the same time, just blocks away from each other.

The Original Martin Luther King Jr. parade strolled through downtown Houston with Congressman John Lewis and Astros' MVP George Springer serving as Grand Marshals.

The parade has been held in downtown Houston for more than 40 years with an estimated 40,000 people in attendance.

The parade was held in memory of Ovide Duncantell, the founder of Houston’s Black Heritage Society, Mayor Turner said on Twitter.

A second parade was held in Midtown, just a few block away.

It's called the Grand Parade and it's celebrating its 25th year. Bill King and Tony Buzbee were the Grand Marshals of that parade.
