"Texas parents can rest assured that Constable Deputies will not tolerate those who recklessly endanger children by ignoring the law," stated Constable Mark Herman.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Nearly two dozen drivers were cited for allegedly failing to stop for school buses in Klein ISD last week, Harris County Constable Mark Herman's office says.

The constable’s office says it received multiple complaints from residents who said drivers were not stopping for buses loading and unloading children.

State law requires drivers stop, in both directions, for school buses loading or unloading children along the roadway. The only exception is on divided highways (with a barrier or unpaved median), in which case only drivers behind the school bus traveling in the same direction must stop.

The constable’s office says the first offense is punishable by a fine ranging from $500 to $1,250. Second offense is a Class B Misdemeanor and may result in jail time.

"Motorists should always be alert and practice safe driving habits when traveling near school buses or anywhere school children gather, including bus stops. Texas parents can rest assured that Constable Deputies will not tolerate those who recklessly endanger children by ignoring the law," stated Constable Mark Herman.
