Firefighters rescue man who fell into manhole behind truck stop

Rescuers lowered a firefighter down into the manhole and used ropes to pull the man to safety, fire officials said.

HOUSTON – Houston firefighters rescued a man after he fell 15 to 20 feet into an open manhole behind a north Houston truck stop overnight.

This happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday near the North Freeway just off Patton Street.

Firefighters responded at that time to a possible rescue after witnesses say they saw the man fall into the manhole. It is not clear how long he was down in the sewer, but witnesses say they were able to communicate with him.

Rescuers lowered a firefighter down into the manhole and used ropes to pull the man to safety, fire officials said. They added that they train for situations like this and did not experience any complications during the rescue.

Firefighters tell KHOU 11 News that the man may have suffered a few bone fractures during the fall but is expected to be OK.
