MD Anderson's Dr. Jim Allison accepts Nobel Prize in Medicine

James Allison, Ph.D., accepted his Nobel prize in medicine Monday morning.

HOUSTON - Years of hard work by one Houston doctor was recognized on the international stage Monday.

Jim Allison, Ph.D., chair of Immunology and executive director of the Immunotherapy Platform at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, accepted his Nobel prize in medicine Monday morning.

Allison was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in October for launching an effective new way to attack cancer by treating the immune system rather than the tumor. He is the first MD Anderson scientist to receive the world’s most preeminent award for outstanding discoveries in the fields of life sciences and medicine.

Tasuku Honjo, M.D., Ph.D., of Kyoto University in Japan, who worked on the groundbreaking treatment, accepted the other half of the prize on the Monday.
