Suspect fatally shot by officer was choking her, HPD says

Police say the man was waving a flag and hitting cars with it in the middle of Beechnut Street near Fondren Road during rush hour on Wednesday.

HOUSTON - More details have been released from the Houston Police Department on the officer-involved shooting that left a man dead and an officer injured in west Houston on Wednesday.

HPD Officer A. Kelley responded to the 7100 block of Beechnut Street around 5:30 p.m. after getting a call about a man hitting random cars with a flag pole.

Officer Kelley saw the suspect striking cars with the pole and when she approached him, he attacked her and knocked her to the ground.

The suspect then wrapped his arm around the officer’s neck and began choking her, reported HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Senior Police Officer G. Garcia and Officers M. Seay, R. Lujan and A. August.

Kelley used her CED (conducted energy device, similar to a taser) on the suspect but it didn't subdue him.

The suspect continued to attack the officer and ignored her verbal commands to stop, HPD said.

After attempting to create distance between her and the suspect, Kelley feared for her life and discharged her duty weapon once at the suspect, striking him in the chest.

Paramedics took the man to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital where he died.

Authorities have not yet released his identity.

Kelley had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. She has been with the South Gessner Patrol Division since August 2016.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
