DPS reopens Houston Gessner Driver License Mega Center

The office has been closed since April 2018 as part of a renovation project. The office hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

HOUSTON – The Texas Department of Public Safety reopened the Houston Gessner Driver License Mega Center to the public Monday.

The office has been closed since April 2018 as part of a renovation project. The office hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

An important upgrade – a designated area located on the property specifically for commercial driver license skills testing and transactions – will be operational in early 2019.

Additionally, 16 new workstations that were added in the main facility during the renovation will allow for immediate capacity increases if DPS resources/staffing are increased by the Legislature in the future.

The Houston-Gessner Mega Center continues to feature advanced technology that allows customers to get in line before they arrive at the office using a cell phone, land line or by going online. DPS encourages customers to take advantage of this convenient option by visiting the DPS website.

DPS continues to remind Texans that the majority of customers who come into Texas driver license offices don't have to. These customers can actually conduct their transaction online (Texas.gov), by phone or by mail.

Prior to coming to the office, call 1-866-DL-RENEW (1-866-357-3639) or check online to determine if your transaction – whether the renewal of a Texas DL or identification (ID) card or an address change – can actually be handled online, by phone or by mail.

By doing so, eligible customers can skip the trip to a DL office and, in turn, decrease transaction times for customers required to go into an office. The eligibility requirements for phone renewal and online renewal are the same. The fee is the same for online, in-person and telephone renewals.

Customers may renew their Texas driver license/ID card up to two years prior to their current card's expiration date, which allows them to choose a convenient time that fits their schedule if an office visit is required.

The original expiration date will remain the same, even if you renew early.
