Mayor Sylvester Turner on HISD board drama: "There's no more tolerance left."

Mayor Sylvester Turner is happy to hear the HISD board may have decided to work together to overcome recent turmoil.

Houston, TX — Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says his tolerance for drama on the HISD school board has run out.

He met with Texas’s top educator this weekend as the board backtracked on its decision to switch interim superintendents.

“The board has agreed to go in a different direction,” said HISD board president Rhonda Skillern-Jones Sunday night.

Turner was happy to hear the board may finally be working together.

“The last thing that parents and students need to be concerned about is whether or not the board members are getting along with one another,” said Turner. “That should be the least of their worries.”

The drama started last Thursday night when a 5 to 4 vote replaced interim superintendent Grenita Lathan with former superintendent Abe Saavedra. On Friday, negative reaction abounded from the school community to city officials. Saturday, we’re told there were meetings and discussion about a possible reversal. Sunday, Saavedra reportedly said he was no longer interested and the board formally decided to backtrack.

“Let me acknowledge and thank them for the actions that they’re saying they will take,” said Turner. “But it needs to be long-lasting. It can’t be now, and then two months from now or six months from now, we’re back at this point again. Because, quite frankly, there’s no more tolerance left.”

There is a news conference Monday to explain further.
