Brooks's Blog: It's snowing in Texas

It's been a long time coming, but we're finally getting our first legit fall front. It even caused this snow to fall in north Texas.

HOUSTON — The passage of this much anticipated cold front will happen fast tomorrow. We'll cool from the muggy 70s in the early morning at the bus stop, to the wind-blown and dry-feeling 60s by lunchtime. Some communities north of Houston may see 50s by sunset! It's the first legit fall front of the season, after we've been teased by two weaker cool fronts in as many weeks. They've done only enough to drop the humidity and lead to slightly cooler mornings, but that in itself was welcome when it happened. But this round of cool air will be potent enough to force our temperatures down. It's even caused snow to fly in the panhandle!

This video was shared by @RMourning on Twitter, in the tiny Texas town of Stratford which lay 80 miles north of Amarillo in the high plains, near the Oklahoma border. Its elevation is 3,600 feet above sea level, allowing temperatures there to fall some 10°-20°F cooler than they would at a lower elevation. As we witnessed today, this sometimes results in wintry precipitation, while areas in the lower plains get normal rain.

No snow or freezing temps will make it this far south for the workweek ahead, but you may find yourself reaching for a sweatshirt and an umbrella. Highs will only reach the 60s for much of the week with overcast skies and passing rain showers. -Meteorologist Brooks Garner
