Loved ones hope for answers in mystery of missing siblings

For the first time in nearly a month, Dina Escobar's children could feel her presence again by returning to the church she considered a second home.

HOUSTON – The family of two missing siblings rely on the comfort of their mother’s church as they hope to find answers to her disappearance.

For the first time in nearly a month, Dina Escobar’s children could feel her presence again by returning to the church she considered a second home.

“We figured we feel closer to her by doing that and to each other,” Liga Salamanca said.

Liga and her siblings met at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in west Houston to remember their mother Sunday. Liga says she and her siblings plan to come every Sunday, knowing it’s what their mother would have wanted.

“A lot of people say being this long, to expect the worst. We’re holding on to a miracle,” Liga said.

Siblings Roy and Dina have been missing since the end of August. A torched van in Galveston found days later belonged to Dina, but searches since have come up empty in their hunt for justice.

Across town, other families with missing or murdered loved ones met in hopes of finding justice and comfort for themselves. Over 300 names were read as part of a Crime Stoppers event, to remember the many cases still unsolved.

Angelina Hellerman placed a photo of her child’s father on the table, among other missing or murdered loved ones. She tells us it meant a lot to see so many people reminding each other that they’re not alone.

“There’s a lot of people who still don’t have justice for their families and I think everyone here is seeking the same thing,” Hellerman said.

Andy Kahan of Houston Crime Stoppers helped to lead the event and was joined by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

“Grief is intensified when justice is lacking. For a lot of families, cases are unsolved, cases have gone cold. We’re hoping to bring them hope,” Kahan said.

Houston police say the case of the missing Escobar siblings is still considered an active missing person’s investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward.
