Mother arrested after daughter, 2, dies from possible beating injuries

Police saw the girl was unresponsive and rushed her and her sister to the hospital. The two-year-old was pronounced dead with blunt force trauma to the torso, head and neck.

HOUSTON — A Houston mom stood in front of a judge Saturday after police say she killed one of her daughters and seriously injured the other.

Both girls are younger than two years old.

Standing in front of a judge, Shandrika Mack was read her rights, as well as all the wrongs police say she committed.

“The felony offense of murder and causing serious bodily injury to a child," the prosecutor said.

Court documents spell out what they say happened to her two daughters, 2-year-old Kaliyah McCowan and her 1-year-old sister.

“Mack flagged down officers in response to her daughter being unresponsive," the prosecutor said.

Police saw Kaliyah was unresponsive and rushed both girls to the hospital. The 2-year-old was died with blunt force trauma to the torso, head and neck.

Her younger sister suffered arm and skull fractures and other injuries.

"A black eye, multiple contusions from her head to her toes," the prosecutor said.

She survived, but spent seven days in the ICU.

The medical team decided both girls had been severely beaten.

“The defendant stated she only knew about a carpet burn on the back leg," the prosecutor said.

Documents show Mack first stated the burns came from the girls’ daycare.

When officers spoke to the daycare, they learned they also noticed the girls’ injuries and launched an internal investigation.

Documents also allege teachers began noticing the injuries and changes to the girls’ demeanor around the same time Mack’s boyfriend had moved in with them.

Police also say nurses told them that if the youngest daughter had not been brought in when she had, she too would’ve died.

KHOU 11 News also reached out to the daycare. We hope to hear more from them on Monday.
