Sexual assault exam numbers spike during 2018 SXSW festival, SAFE says

The SAFE Alliance revealed "overwhelming" sexual assault exam numbers from the 2018 SXSW festival.

AUSTIN — Staff with the SAFE Alliance reported a spike in forensic nursing exams during 2018's South by Southwest festival.

SAFE’s Eloise House provides forensic nursing exams after a sexual assault happens.

The SAFE Alliance reported they conducted "an unprecedented number of exams" -- 48 in three weeks -- including 13 individuals in one weekend over the course of the festival.

Staff told KVUE they just started recording numbers specifically for SXSW in 2018. However, they have seen a spike in exams during the month of March over the last few years.

  • March 2016: 42 exams
  • March 2017: 54 exams
  • March 2018: 66 exams
