Water main breaks, floods some downtown streets

Roads are swamped on Saint Joseph near Smith Street where a construction crew drilling for fiber lines accidentally hit the water main.

HOUSTON — A water main break in downtown Houston caused quite a mess Thursday afternoon.

Roads were swamped on Saint Joseph near Smith Street where a construction crew drilling for fiber lines accidentally hit the water main.

The crew called the City of Houston to shut off the water. Meanwhile part of the sidewalk is eroding and appears to be buckling.

The city's public works department said a 12-inch pipe busted, which crews quickly tried repairing. Repairs to the sidewalk are expected to take some time.
