Cyclist hit, killed in same spot where another cyclist was fatally struck last year

Officers spent Tuesday afternoon interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the crash scene, which lies directly in front of a memorial for another cyclist killed at the same spot in February 2017.

HOUSTON – Police say a woman died after being hit by a dump truck, while riding her bike near Rice University Tuesday.

According to the Houston Police Department, it happened just before noon on Main Street near Sunset Boulevard.

Officers spent Tuesday afternoon interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the crash scene, which lies directly in front of a memorial for another cyclist killed at the same spot in February 2017.

Police tell KHOU the victim in Tuesday’s incident had just wrapped up lunch with her husband at Rice University. They say she left the campus on her bike and rode onto Sunset Boulevard from the sidewalk.

Investigators believe the woman arrived at the intersection of Sunset and Main at the same time as a dump truck heading the same direction, with both having a green light. They say as that dump truck driver turned right onto Main, the cyclist entered the crosswalk and struck the truck’s back right tire.

“Cyclists have to abide by all the laws of a motorist when they’re on the street,” said Assistant Chief Wendy Baimbridge, during a briefing at the scene. “So, at that point, it sounds like…again this is still under investigation, that the cyclist would be at fault.”

Police did not release the victim’s identity. Officials with Rice University released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying the victim was the spouse of a member of the Rice community, but wouldn’t release anything else.

Investigators say the driver of that dump truck is also distraught over what happened. He remained at the scene, and no charges are currently filed.
