Memorial Park honors Barbara Bush with wreath in Bush Grove

"They're the Bush family,' said John Ziomek. "Although they may not be from Texas, as the saying goes, they got here as quickly as they could, and they made an amazing impact on the city and the state at large."

HOUSTON- In remembering Barbara Bush, we're reminded of just how much she loved Houston. On Friday, Memorial Park tweeted a photo of the former First Lady as she ran through the park with her dog.

The day before Mrs. Bush's funeral on Saturday, park-goers passed the George and Barbara Bush Presidential Grove. The park set up a wreath and displayed a photo of Mrs. Bush while strangers left a book and a bouquet of flowers.

"You think about the generations that she spanned. She was born before the Great Depression, she was born when Babe Ruth was the best baseball player in the country," said John Ziomek. "She was a late teen, early adult during World War II. Think about all the things that she saw in her lifetime and all the things she and her husband were able to accomplish."

Ziomek and his son Paul stopped and took a photo with Mrs. Bush's memorial, which is near the golf course on the north side of the park.

"Imagine walking through here and just seeing them? That would be awesome," said Samantha Garcia.

"I guess you could say she's everybody's grandma," said Julian Henaine.

The U.S. flag that's positioned in the middle of the grove flew at half-staff and it appears as though someone hung a string of pearls around the flagpole.

"They’re the Bush family," said Ziomek. "Although they may not be from Texas, as the saying goes, they got here as quickly as they could, and they made an amazing impact on the city."
