Preparations underway before city's celebration of life for Barbara Bush

The city of Houston is hosting a celebration of life for former First Lady Barbara Bush Thursday evening.

HOUSTON -- The city of Houston is hosting a celebration of life for former First Lady Barbara Bush tonight.

The public is encouraged to wear pearls and the color blue. The event will be in Hermann Square. It begins at 6 p.m.

Some preparations are already underway.

Meanwhile, flowers are being left in her honor there and in the nearby Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza.

Both areas are expected to draw a big crowd. It’s because city officials say the Bushes are beloved.

“Houstonians love the Bushes. We know that. Every time they entered a stadium, whether football, basketball, baseball or any of our fabulous theaters – or just entered a public place, like this park, people were very gracious to them and acknowledged them coming and going,” Susan Christian, for Mayor’s Office for Special Events, said.

How many people does the city expect at the event? The city simply says a lot.

Coincidentally, the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation’s annual gala is going on at the Hobby Center tonight also. It was planned before her passing.

So that means the area will indeed be very busy.

There is also a public visitation Friday at St. Martin’s Church and invite-only service Saturday.
