Lightning strike likely to blame for house fire in NW Houston

A mother and her three children are safe after a lightning strike from overnight storms likely sparked a fire on their roof and attic in northwest Houston.

HOUSTON – A mother and her three children are safe after a lightning strike from overnight storms likely sparked a fire on their roof and attic in northwest Houston.

According to the Houston Fire Department, fire crews responded just before 1 a.m. Wednesday to a house fire at Kemp Hollow and Moss Tree.

When HFD arrived on the scene, firefighters found flames and smoke coming from the attic and roof area.

Fire crews made a fast attack and got the fire under control.

HFD said there was a mother and three small children home at the time, but their smoke detectors alerted them to the fire, allowing them to get out safely.

The mother said she and her children were asleep, when she heard a lightning strike that was louder than the others. After a few minutes, she started smelling smoke, and the smoke detectors went off.

There was extensive fire damage to the attic and roof of the home. No injuries were reported.

HFD arson investigators were called to scene to determine an official cause of the fire.
