BAYTOWN, Texas - JSW Steel (USA) Inc. could invest up to $500 million in a previously announced expansion of its steel manufacturing infrastructure in Baytown.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott visited JSW Group’s headquarters in Mumbai, India, on March 26 to sign a memorandum of cooperation regarding the expansion, which will be completed in phases, according to a press release. The state also has offered the company a $3.4 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant for the expansion.

The first phase will enhance the capabilities of JSW’s plate and pipe mill unit in Baytown. That $150 million investment is already underway, according to JSW’s press release. John Hritz, JSW Steel USA's president and CEO, told the Houston Business Journal in June that the first phase would be a complete retrofit of its existing Baytown steel plate mill. The $150 million investment is expected to be complete by March 2020, per JSW’s press release.
