On Saturday, millions of students across America will take part in the March for Our Lives to advocate for gun reform. The movement was sparked by the school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 students and staff dead and several others injured.
At least 20,000 students in Houston are expected to join the march which begins at 9 a.m. in Tranquility Park.
Not only did students plan the event themselves, they’ve also raised roughly $20,000 to pay for logistics like traffic control, road closures and security.
“This has given me hope that the future is bright,” said Kelly Choi from Cypress Woods High School. “That we can make a change and that we are going to do good things.”
Student organizers say the march is not tied to a political party and they don't believe gun reform is a red or blue issue.
“I am a Republican loud and proud,” said Marcel McClinton from Stratford High School. “But this is more than just a political debate… a political issue, it's a moral one. Reform versus control are two different things.”
Participants are asked to wear blue to the march.
Lyft is offering free rides to student marchers. Organizers say there will also be free bus rides from some suburban cities. Click here to find more details on their Facebook page.
