LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas - A 4-year-old drowned in a pond Thursday after he wandered away from his home in Liberty County, officials said.

Deputies with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 11:30 a.m. Thursday about a little boy who had wandered from his home on County Road 2017 in Daisetta.

The boy had been missing for about 30 minutes before family called authorities for help. After several minutes of searching in and around a nearby man-made pond, Hull-Daisetta firefighters found the boy there.

Officials say the 4-year-old was found unresponsive in the shoulder-deep pond.

According to authorities, it appears the boy was playing in the yard when his mother stepped inside for a moment and he wandered off.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
