Brooks's Blog: Why I'm wearing purple today

Today, March 14th is, "Pi Day" (3.14). It's a science nerd holiday and it's a great excuse to bring up a serious matter and advocate equality in education and opportunities in the sciences among genders.
Wearing purple to advocate women in STEM fields.

Meteorology falls within the fields of, "STEM": Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Today this field is facing a glaring imbalance. There are far more male chief meteorologist than female. According to the AMS (American Meteorological Society), 92% of chief meteorologists are male. That leaves just 8 out of 100 being female. Beyond it being patently unfair to women when it comes to pay (if not, abhorrently), an entire perspective and style-of-approach is being under-represented in this field. That hurts everyone. In the bigger picture, according to OCE Women in STEM, while more than half of college graduates today are women, only a quarter of those females participate in STEM fields. ..................................................................As our culture progresses to a more enlightened tomorrow, with boundless STEM discoveries ahead, it is more important now than ever to encourage young girls to consider STEM for a career so they're prepared should they choose to take that path. I hope the world my daughter grows up in is one of bountiful opportunities in the filed of her choice -- certainly more so than exists today. -Meteorologist Brooks Garner
