Tour bus crash: Federal investigators arrive in Alabama

BALDWIN COUNTY, Alabama - Federal investigators arrived in Alabama Wednesday morning to begin work at the crash site of the charter bus that wrecked while returning dozens of Channelview High School band students to Houston from Disney World.

Bus driver Harry Caligone, 65, was killed and several others were injured.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators gave a media briefing Wednesday afternoon.

They did not give specific details about the investigation.

An NTSB spokesman told KHOU 11 the investigation could take between one and two years to finish.

“Typically in these buses there is no black box,” said NTSB investigator Pete Kotowski.

Kotowski said he had no information to release regarding the autopsy of Caligone, who had almost made it to Mobile where he was going to be replaced by another driver when the bus crashed.

Caligone was more than seven hours into the trip at the time of the wreck, according to Kotowski.

Federal investigators will arrive in Houston on Thursday to visit the charter bus company, First Class Tours.

The company agreed on Tuesday to an interview with KHOU 11 but abruptly canceled on Wednesday morning through its public relations representative.

First Class Tours President Jeff Rogers was no longer available at any time to discuss the company’s response to the crash, according to Kitchen PR managing director Anne Steinberg.
