Lockdown drill at Hebron High School causes panic, confusion

Scot Finch, the principal of Hebron High School, said he didn't make it clear the drill was taking place.

CARROLLTON, Texas -- A lockdown drill at Hebron High School in Lewisville ISD caused panic and confusion for many students and parents Thursday afternoon.

Scot Finch, the principal of Hebron High School, said he didn't make it clear the drill was taking place at the school. The school said it received several phone calls from parents who were concerned something was happening at the school. The "mistake" had also created a "brief panic," for the students.

He has since issued an apology. "I take full responsibility for the communication gap, and I want to assure you it will not happen again," Finch said in a letter.

Principal Finch posted the following letter on the school's website:

Hebron Parents,

I need to offer you a most sincere apology for the way today’s lockdown drill was conducted. It is our district protocol to ensure students know the situation is a drill, and I failed to make that clear today. This mistake understandably created a brief sense of panic for our students until it became apparent the situation was a drill.

I take full responsibility for the communication gap, and I want to assure you it will not happen again.

If there is something positive to be gained from today, I can tell you that our students responded admirably to the call for a lockdown, and our building was quickly secure.

I apologize again for the way this situation was handled.

Sincerely,

Scot Finch

Principal

Hebron High School
