David's Blog: Drought Update

The storm track off the Pacific this winter has favored the northern Rocky Mountains and Pacific northwest with plenty of heavy rain and snow. Quite often when this track sets up, the southern Rockies are left starved for snow pack. That's why we have severe drought conditions in the four corners region of the southwestern U.S. extending into Oklahoma and north Texas.

Parts of Texas are in severe drought. Winter rains were not enough to break the dry spell in the Texas panhandle. Reservoir storage basins like lake Meredith will need to rely on snow melt runoff from the New Mexico mountains to stay level. A storm headed for the New Mexico Rockies should help with more snowfall next week. Houston and southeast Texas report good conditions with no drought in the area.
