HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A former sergeant with the Harris County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office has been charged with sexual assault.

Edward Mata, 49, is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in the 2500 block of Clinton Drive on Oct. 29 last year. He was booked into the Harris County Jail on March 6.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Mata invited a woman to his hotel room with whom he had been exchanging flirty text messages.

Once there, the woman later told deputies, she smelled alcohol on Mata’s breath and that he kept putting her hand on his leg. When she told him to stop, she told deputies, he turned violent—grabbing her hair and yanking her head back. Mata then threw her on a couch, where he sexually assaulted her, deputies said.

The woman told deputies that Mata forced her to stay with him at the hotel until he fell asleep, which is when she left and went to a hospital.

The Precinct 6 constable's office said Mata was employed by the department for less than a year. He was fired from the department Feb. 28.
