Presumed to be long gone before the Houston Texans’ first selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, a rough combine could change the calculus on Oklahoma offensive tackle Orlando Brown.

Instead of wondering if Brown will be available for Houston at the No. 67 overall pick, now the conversation has changed to, “Would it be a mistake to take him?”

Brown has posted terrible workout numbers. His size remains awesome at 6-7 and 345 pounds, with long arms and a huge wingspan. Alas, size isn’t everything.

His bad day started on Thursday with the bench press. Brown managed just 14 reps at 225 pounds, a lower total than most of the running backs here in Indianapolis. Long arms are an impediment to benching, so the Sooner left tackle got a bit of a pass from the NFL and media.

The pass sailed incomplete after Friday morning.

It wasn’t just the slow time. Brown looked sloppy and stiff at the same time. His work in positional drills didn’t help. Brown struggled to bend his knees and his feet just don’t move as fast as his peers of comparable size.

For a player with uneven game film, it’s been a very rough time in Indy. It will be interesting to see how much it impacts his draft projections, and if the Texans will still have (presumed) interest.
