Movie featuring Harvey survivors being filmed in Houston

Shooting for the movie "Harvey" is now underway in Houston, and most scenes will feature average Houstonians who survived the deadly storm.

Outside a southeast Houston gym, cameras are rolling.

"The instinct for a Harvey film would be to make it all about the water," said Cara Cochran, an actress in "Harvey."

But "Harvey," a movie by Michael Sterling, will be about a lot more than that. Shooting is now underway in Houston, and most scenes will feature average Houstonians who survived the deadly storm.

"Can't nobody tell the story better than the ones who went through it," Sterling said.

KHOU 11 cameras were given behind-the-scenes access as crews show a shelter scene where evacuees showed up for a safe place to stay.

"Everybody has their own individual story," said Chelsea Hill.

Hill and her family drove through flooded streets searching for formula for their new baby girl. She's one of dozens of survivors invited to be part of the film.

"It all brings back memories of what everyone went through, and it's hard to listen to," Hill said.

It's not an easy film to be a part of. Six months later, emotions are still raw.

"Hurricane Harvey meant something to all of them, and it meant something to all of us," said casting producer Nkem Denchukwu.

Producers and directors are working with a small budget. This movie won't be a Hollywood blockbuster hit, but it will be real and authentic, something every Houstonian who watches can somehow relate to.

"You want to mirror real life to be as accurate with the experience as possible," Cochran said. "So to have actual evacuees that actually experienced Harvey, that's about as accurate as you can get."
