BCSO: 50 arrested after cock fighting ring discovered

Deputies say 50 people were arrested in connection to a cock fighting ring in the Pearland area over the weekend.

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas – Deputies say 50 people were arrested in connection to a cock fighting ring in the Pearland area over the weekend.

According to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, at 2 p.m. on Sunday deputies received a call in reference to a possible rooster fighting operation, also referred to as cock fighting, in the 17700 block of Wells Drive in the unincorporated area of Pearland.

Deputies responded to the area and discovered a very large number of vehicles and individuals to be at scene. Deputies were able to detain numerous individuals after discovering a very large scale, elaborate, cock fighting operation.

BCSO investigators and the Brazoria County Animal Control Division were summoned to the scene after numerous live roosters as well as several roosters were found that are believed to have been killed during the fighting event.

Investigators have seized 165 birds that are currently being housed at Brazoria County Sheriff's Office Animal Control. The exact number of deceased birds is hard to be determined but is believed to be between 30 to 50.

Investigators arrested and transported 50 individuals from the location. They are currently being held at the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office Detention Center where charges of cock fighting, state jail felony, are pending on three of the individuals and charges of cocking fighting, Class C misdemeanor, are pending on the remaining 47 subjects.

The disposition of the birds will be determined by a Brazoria County Court upon completion of the seizure proceedings.
