Heavy rain may slow you down on Sunday

Another weekend and another round of rain. As we head into Sunday, expect to be slowed down by a round of what could be some very heavy rain.

The What

We've been in persistent wet pattern over southeast Texas. It reminds me very much of that scene out of 'Forrest Gump' where he's in Vietnam and he says "one day it began to rain and it didn't stop for four months!" Sure feels that way.

The reason it's been wet is because of the jet stream that has parked itself over the area. The jet stream acts as railroad tracks for storm systems. As long as the tracks are over us, we'll continue to get wet.

Aiding the rain will be a cold front that slips into the region and stalls out overnight Saturday into Sunday. This will help focus the moisture over our area. If showers and storms begin to train, we could see some areas pile the rain up to as much as three inches or so. This will cause ponding issues but no wide spread flooding is expected.

TIMING

The best chance of rain begins late tonight for the northern counties as the front slips in. By tomorrow morning, early, that chance is best along the immediate coast. As we transition into the afternoon, that front begins to back up into the city of Houston and that will focus the bulk of the rain over the metro.

So to recap: the best chance tonight is the northern counties. When you wake up Sunday morning, the coastal counties will see the best chance of rain. By Sunday afternoon, the highest risk moves into Houston from the south.

The rain should wane and dissipate late Sunday evening before waking way for a very nice Monday.

WHAT'S EXPECTED

According to the National Weather Service, the heavy rain will be the primary threat. The Storm Prediction Center out of Norman, Oklahoma has placed southeast Texas in the most least likely threat for severe weather. While an isolated spin up of a brief tornado can't be ruled out thanks to strong, veering winds of different directions aloft, the biggest threat is rain.

Atmospheric moisture values are near record territory for this time of year so any storm that moves over the same area will be capable of temporary flooding low-lying roads.

Thunder and lightning will also be possible.
