KIPP co-founder fired following allegations of sexual misconduct

An investigation was opened last spring following an allegation of sex abuse of a student by Feinberg in the late 1990s. KIPP officials said the allegation had not previously been reported to KIPP nor authorities.

KIPP Houston Public Schools has fired its co-founder, Mike Feinberg, after an investigation revealed “credible evidence” of sexual misconduct.

An investigation was opened last spring following an allegation of sex abuse of a student by Feinberg in the late 1990s. KIPP officials said the allegation had not previously been reported to KIPP nor authorities.

Mr. Feinberg denies the allegation.

KIPP immediately contacted Child Protective Services and began its own investigation. KIPP officials later hired WilmerHale to conduct an independent investigation. Neither investigation confirmed the initial allegation, but investigators found the allegation to have credibility.

WilmerHale also found evidence of sexual harassment by Feinberg involving a KIPP Houston employee in 2004 that resulted in a financial settlement. They also found a harassment claim against Feinberg involving another KIPP Houston employee in the same time period, but it could not be verified.

“Mr. Feinberg’s actions were incompatible with the leadership qualities that are central to our mission,” KIPP officials said in a letter to employees. “As a result, the KIPP Foundation board and the KIPP Houston board have terminated Mr. Feinberg.”
