Nancy Pelosi visits Houston, offers plan of action after FL massacre

"What we're saying," said democrat Nancy Pelosi, "there's not one person in this Congress whose political survival is important compared to the lives of these children."

HOUSTON - If you were to take the pulse of the nation right now, it seems everyone can agree something needs to be done after 17 people were shot and killed in a Parkland, Florida school on Wednesday.

But, right now, the country can't agree on what should be done.

The Minority Leader for the U.S. House of Representatives, during a visit to Houston on Saturday, said Congress would start with a three-step approach.

Nancy Pelosi believes it would be approved if voted on by the House.

"First of all, we can expand the common-sense background checks," said Pelosi, a democrat from California. "Secondly, we have to remove the prohibition from the Centers from Disease Control even knowing what the prevention measures could be to stop this. The third thing we could do, I don’t know why the speaker isn’t doing it, is to establish a select-committee. If we have our disagreements, let’s sit down, iron them out."

Pelosi was in Houston Saturday to discuss the tax cuts approved by President Donald Trump. Her audience was made up of Houston area educators like Lucia Moreno.

"It’s at a point where we do need to do something, we need to have something in place," said Moreno of school security in the wake of the deadly shooting in Florida.

"Basically, what we’re saying to the speaker is, there’s not one person in this Congress whose political survival is important compared to the lives of these children," said Pelosi. "Let us have a committee to find bi-partisanship, to find common ground."

Earlier this week, President Trump said the nation needs to take a closer look at mental health.

Florida's governor, Rick Scott said "everything's on the table" when considering tightening gun control laws in the state following the school shooting.
