Longtime entrepreneurs working to preserve "Old Austin"

"It is an iconic Austin watering hole," said one of the owners.

They've been keeping Austin fed and entertained for decades.

Now, the pair behind Esther’s Follies is taking on a new venture to preserve old Austin.

The Tavern, a 102-year-old building and decades old sports bar, is now owned by Shannon Sedwick and Michael Shelton.

"It's been a sports bar before Austin had sports bars,” said Sedwick.

Although the duo recently purchased The Tavern, they’ve actually owned it once before. Sedwick and Shelton bought The Tavern in 1979 before selling it a few years later. They also own Patsy's Cowgirl Café off Ben White Boulevard.

Now, Sedwick and Shelton are excited to make some small changes -- like improved lighting and a better menu -- while keeping the sports bar close to the same it’s been for decades.

"It is an iconic Austin watering hole,” said Sedwick, who insists they want it to stay that way.

Sedwick and Shelton told KVUE they are working with a new chef to improve the menu, and The Tavern will stay open during the transition.
