The proposed cuts include programs that fund Galveston beach expansion projects and funding for fecal bacteria monitoring in the water.

GALVESTON, Texas - An analysis of President Donald Trump’s proposed budget shows cuts could have significant impacts on Galveston’s beaches if passed, the Galveston County Daily News reports.

The proposed cuts include programs that fund Galveston beach expansion projects and funding for fecal bacteria monitoring in the water.

Trump's 2019 budget proposal: Funding for wall, infrastructure and fighting opioid abuse

Galveston’s “Babe’s Beach” cost $22 million to build. A little more than half of the funds came from the federal government.

Trump’s budget would also cut $2. -billion from the Environmental Protection Agency and $200 million from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, according to the Galveston County Daily News.

Galveston’s well-known bacteria-monitoring program would be among those lost if Trump’s budget is passed, the newspaper reports. The program helps swimmers on Galveston’s beaches stay current on the locations with the highest levels of fecal bacteria found in the water.

A proposed budget must be approved by Congress, which has disregarded presidents’ suggested budget cuts in the past.
