Jerry Lewis is celebrating his 90th birthday Wednesday in a fitting way for an entertainment legend — with the release announcement of his first major movie role in over 20 years.

Lewis' starring role in Max Rose will be released in New York and Los Angeles in late August before a further expansion after Labor Day, the film's producers announced on Wednesday.

Lewis, who is spending the birthday at his Las Vegas home with his family,  will also be present for the film's official premiere on April 10 at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The museum has just completed a comprehensive career retrospective called "Happy Birthday, Mr. Lewis: The Kid Turns 90."

"We can think of no better way to celebrate Jerry's landmark birthday than to announce that Max Rose will be reaching theaters this summer,” the film's producers Lawrence Inglee, and Garrett Kelleher said in a joint statement.  “His commitment to the film has been unwavering every step of the way."

Max Rose was written and directed by Daniel Noah, with Lewis in the title role and in every scene. Lewis plays a retired jazz musician whose beloved wife of over six decades has just passed away. He finds clues she had a longtime affair with another man and seeks the rival out. Max Rose also stars Claire Bloom, Kerry Bishe and Kevin Pollak (as Max’s son).

The film premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival with Lewis receiving a triumphant reception from the French audience.

Max Rose did not fare well with critics at the time.

Variety called it a "sappy sudser in which every stage of grief overstays its welcome" and an "excruciating indie."
