Starting to see the similarities?

If you've been binge-watching a lot of TV, you'll probably notice a lot of things start to look the same. Namely, the female characters' hair starts to look the same.

This isn't you going crazy, every woman on TV actually has the same hair: straight at the top, with loose curls at the bottom. It's a hairstyle that rarely exists on women in real life, but it's everywhere on TV. Not because actresses come out of the same robot factory. This hairstyle, which Racked dubbed "The Hair," is used frequently on TV for several reasons: It looks good on the small screen, and it looks good on every ethnicity.

Racked investigated why "The Hair" is so common on female characters, speaking to the hair department head for film and television, Cynthia Vanis, who has worked for YoungerLaw & Order: SVU, and Louie.

"Over the last couple of years, straight hair went out and embracing more of a curl or wave took over. Also, it's so much more manageable with shooting. Straight hair moves a lot, and if one piece is out of place, you can totally tell. You can cheat easier when there's more movement within the hair."

It's also easy to achieve, and can be used on actresses of all ages and demographics.

"It's super relatable and versatile. It's not specific — it works for people with shorter hair, with longer hair. TV lives in this world of sort-of-done, but sort-of-effortless looks. That's why they all have this hair. It's like, 'You could attain this at home, but I also look really polished and put together.'"

So remember, if you ever see several women in one shot looking like they all went to the same hair salon, you can blame "The Hair."
