Watch: 'Anomalisa' animators' goal: Two seconds a day

Two seconds of animation a day.

That was the lofty goal set by animators for the Oscar-nominated film Anomalisa, directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson. It's tough going in this detail-orientated stop-motion world.

It's all laid out in this exclusive extra (part of the Anomalisa digital HD release March 15).

Lisa (voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Michael (David Thewlis) get to know each other in 'Anomalisa.'

Very often, two seconds was too much given the complexity of shooting stop-motion animated scenes with multiple characters moving.

Scenes like a moving walkway in an airport were incredibly taxing, as was a scene where the main character, Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) walks into a room filled with women typing.

"It's definitely a lot to keep track of," says animator Dan Mackenzie.
