Fans mistake Sir George Martin for George R.R. Martin after producer's death

Sometimes the generation gap becomes very, very clear. Like when the name "George Martin" means two completely different things to different people.

When the news that acclaimed British music producer Sir George Martin, who signed the Beatles, had passed away, some people (many of whom, let's be honest, were on the younger side) mistakenly thought that it was acclaimed Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. Those fans took to social media to express their grief at losing an author they adore so much (and some to panic that the book series has not been completed yet).

Even a local news site got caught up in the confusion.

Some fans were quick to chide others' confusion, or to make the inevitable jokes.

George R.R. Martin himself responded on his Livejournal:

While it is strangely moving to realize that so many people around the world care so deeply about my life and death, I have to go with Mark Twain and insist that the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

It was Sir George Martin, of Beatles fame, who has passed away. Not me.

He will be missed. I never met Sir George (I did meet Paul McCartney once, for about a minute, while waiting for the valet to bring my rental car up at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills), but like many millions of others, I loved the Beatles, and Martin's contribution to their music is worthy of recognition and honor.
