Girls star/creator Lena Dunham, who has written about her struggle with endometriosis, was hospitalized Saturday for a ruptured ovarian cyst. It will require surgery, her rep confirmed.

"This morning, she suffered from an ovarian cyst rupture and has been taken to the hospital," her spokesperson, Cindi Berger, told People in a statement.

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue normally found in the uterus grows outside that organ. It causes chronic pelvic cramps, irregular menstruation as well as infertility in many patients.

She described her longterm battle with the reproductive illness, which went improperly diagnosed for over a decade, in her Lenny newsletter.

Her condition flared up again earlier this year, causing Dunham to opt out of doing press for the sixth season of her HBO comedy. She explained in a February Facebook post that, "My body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it's time to rest."
