The creators of the FX mini-series The People V. O.J. Simpson have just been handed a gift from the TV gods and they are taking full advantage of it.

With the world reeling at the news Friday that a knife was found buried on O.J. Simpson's former property and is only now being investigated after a Los Angeles police officer sat on it for decades, the creators of American Crime Story had this cheeky tweet in response.

No doubt they were joking but the tweet seemed to imply they knew all along the knife existed and was possibly the long-lost murder weapon that killed Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman back in 1994.

But that would be as improbable as this possibly "bogus" story about the knife, as Los Angeles Police Capt. Andy Neiman put it to reporters Friday.

The knife was supposedly found buried on Simpson's former property years ago, possibly during demolition of his house, and was turned it over to a motorcycle cop who was working as a security guard at a filming location. For some reason, he did not turn it over to homicide detectives and it only came to light in the past month, Neiman said.

Neiman said investigators are looking into whether "this whole story is possibly bogus from the get-go." Meanwhile, the knife is being analyzed by an LAPD crime lab for DNA or other material.

One of Simpson's former prosecutors, Marcia Clark, called it "a remarkable development," according to ET. One of his former defense lawyers, F. Lee Bailey, told a local Fox affiliate the report was "ridiculous."

Never mind that Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995, and cannot be tried again. Never mind that the chain of custody for evidence has been trashed. Never mind the coincidence of this story appearing in the middle of the run of The People v. O.J.Simpson. (Quickly seizing an opportunity, FX announced late Friday that it would run the first five episodes of the series in a commercial-free marathon starting at 10 pm Saturday,  and 7 pm on the West Coast.)

Some tweeters signaled their skepticism.
