Alicia Vikander's Oscar dress: More Disney princess than style icon
The Danish Girl star and face of Louis Vuitton glided onto the Oscars red carpet looking like a modern Belle of Beauty and the Beast in (of course) a custom Louis Vuitton gown.
The dusty yellow strapless dress with balloon hemline is unique for the design house. And it's provoked a mix of praise, confusion and a few meh's.
The hem seemed to be most problematic for underwhelmed critics, and understandably so. The flash of her heels is a nice touch but it otherwise looks like the skirt is snagged somewhere on the inside.
The color is another hangup. It's reminiscent of the Dior dress Nicole Kidman wore to the 1997 awards, which was met with initial criticism for the interesting shade of chartreuse but has ultimately gone down as one of the more successful Oscars gowns of all time.
Vikander had been a roll this awards season -- which is likely one reason for the intense scrutiny. But the voluminous ballgown is a departure from the form-fitted, super sophisticated dresses she had been favoring. And that may be our biggest quibble. There is a pull for young artists to go full-on princess at their first major awards show, and Vikander looks more Disney than sleek, style icon.
