Was it an accident? Or deliberately malicious?

Salma Hayek is mourning the shooting death of her dog on her northwestern Washington State ranch last week.

"I haven't posted for a week as I been mourning the death of my dog, Mozart who I personally delivered out of his mother's womb," she posted on her Instagram page. "He was found dead in my ranch last Friday with a shot close to his heart."

Who would do such a thing — to any dog? Local authorities are investigating.

Hayek wrote that she hopes they will find out what happened and "do justice" for Mozart, 9, who looked like a German shepherd mix. She described him as a "wonderful," "loving and loyal" companion who didn't deserve a "slow and painful death."

Hayek, who was out of town when the dog's death was reported Feb. 19, has a ranch in Thurston County, which includes the state capital of Olympia.

According to what the county Sheriff’s Office told local TV station KING 5, a necropsy determined that a pellet from a pellet gun went between two of the dog's ribs and nicked an artery; Mozart slowly bled to death.

Salma Hayek says her dog was fatally shot at her Wash. ranch

Deputy Lt. Cliff Ziesemer told the TV station that groundskeeper Jody Littlejohn was on horseback and took Hayek's two dogs, including Mozart, for a run. But as they returned home, Mozart started barking and headed down a trail, possibly onto someone else's property.

When the dog didn't return, Littlejohn began searching and found the dog dead.

Ziesemer called the fatal shot "a fluke" that wouldn't have normally killed a dog. It may be the shooter was just trying to scare the dog, not kill him, Ziesemer told reporters, and the dog probably bled out as he tried to run home.

The Mexican-born Hayek, 49, has posted selfies with her pooches, even with her co-star pooches, on Instagram.

She's been shooting an upcoming comedy, Drunk Parents, with Alec Baldwin, who get disastrously sloshed the night after dropping their daughter off at college.

Hayek is married to one of France's richest men, Francois-Henri Pinault, and she's a major dog lover, so much so that she has been known to pick up multiple strays in the street. Last summer, she told Jimmy Fallon she had nine dogs in total and her husband was fed up.
